Once in a while you walk into a place and before you can you even get inside, you recognize its cool factor.
Kala Salon just happens to be one of those places. The salon is housed in a seriously hip warehouse-like space, a refreshing change from all the overtly girly salons that abound. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good pink-tinged, ultra-feminine salon, but Kala feels modern. There’s tons of open space, exposed brick walls and lounge-y music playing in the background.
It’s not all about ambience here, either. I’m the first to admit that I’m irrationally paranoid when it comes to haircuts. I like my hair to look a certain way at all times: Long, dark and simple.
My stylist, Victor was incredible – super personable and capable and I loved that he gave me the kind of cut I wanted without trying to sway my in a different direction. The final result was precise but still dramatic. The salon was even accommodating when I showed up late due to Friday evening traffic.
There’s one drawback and it has to do with location; I tend to frequent Gold Coast and River North salons just because they’re so convenient for me and Kala is in River West. I do think Kala is worth a bit of a trip if you don’t live near the salon, but the fact is that for most people, it’s going to be tough to run out of the office for a midday cut or stop by immediately after work for an appointment.
All in all, I had a great experience at Kala. I would definitely go back with a group of girlfriends for some last-minute pampering before heading out for the night.
Why I Love It:
-The ambience is amazing. Like I said, it’s so refreshing and just feels cool.
-If your experience is anything like mine, you’ll get a fantastic cut here.
-Super friendly staff.
-They’re open till 8, so feel free to book an appointment and head straight out from there.
