I live right in the heart of the city, which is great except for one thing: the lack of space in my apartment. My bedroom at my parent’s house seems downright palatial in comparison to the one I inhabit in Chicago. Would I change it? No. But making the most of a smaller space is undoubtedly challenging.
Also challenging: Making a space – any space, regardless of size – one’s own. In college I thought an Audrey Hepburn painting was the answer. It took me about two weeks to realize every other college girl has the same idea.
So here’s a solution: why not make something that can act as a decorative piece? Let me make one thing clear: I am not an artist. If I can pull of this project, anyone can. All you need is a box of crayons, a piece of poster board, some glue, a blow dryer and a place in your home where you can make a little bit of a mess.
Here’s how it goes:
A few tips:
- Make sure you have enough crayons to cover the entire top of the poster board before you start. The last thing you want is to start attaching crayons only to find that you need to go buy more and change up your order at the last minute.
- While applying heat to the crayons you can drag the blow dryer down to get the wax to reach the bottom of the poster board. Move the dryer from side to side so the colors really blend together and splatter over the page.
- Before you start blow drying be sure to wax-proof your area. Definitely put newspaper or a garbage down on the floor below the poster board and cover your walls as well. It goes without saying: don’t wear anything you don’t want to ruin while doing this.
